_ I now had the two ends of the bed but I still needed the two sides. One of the sides needed yet more slats fitted to it. Here you can see that I'm laying out some slats on the top and bottom of one side to work out the layout. I've already cut the shallow mortises on the ends of the lower rail. These will be held in by bed bolts so the mortise and tenon are only there to help me position the part.
Here you can see that the back more clearly.
Next came glue up: First the slats on the head and foot boards are glued in then the legs are glued to the resultant structure.
The head and footboards are fixed to the long stretchers by bed bolts. This is so that I can transport the furniture. There is no way you'd get this bed upstairs in one piece.
The bed is pretty much finished. All that was left to do now was to add the base for the mattress and then build a ladder. I'm afraid I haven’t got any photos of the building of these (I was just too tired to take photos).
The bed was finished off with several coats of boiled linseed oil.
